Finding Your Perfect Hiking Companion

With over 80 miles of trails in the Bozeman area, it’s no wonder why hiking is a favorite pastime of many residents. There are few better ways to enjoy the outdoors, access killer views, and take your fitness to the next level.
If you’re considering adding a four legged hiking companion to the mix, it’s important to choose a breed that possesses the stamina, temperament, and physical abilities needed for the trail.
Here are just a few dog breeds you may want to consider.
1. Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds, also known as “Aussies,” have become increasingly popular due to their intelligence, energy, and size variations.
Herding dogs make great hiking companions as they are often attentive, easily trainable, and loyal to their humans.
If you love the idea of an Aussie, make sure you have plenty of time to give them the exercise they need, as well as the mental stimulation they require.
2. Siberian Husky
Huskies love cold weather, making them great mountain dogs. They are also built for endurance, with strong legs to cover distance and thick coats to keep them warm during cooler months.
While huskies are often friendly and playful, they do require firm training to ensure they stay close to their human on the trail. It’s important to practice commands with your dog before taking them on an off-leash adventure.
3. Labrador Retriever
“Labs” make great family dogs, due to their friendly nature and train-ability. They possess tons of energy, love to explore, and are built to endure long hikes or rugged terrain. These qualities make them excellent hunting companions as well.
Retrievers are also known for their love of water, and will most likely take advantage of any hike that includes streams or lakes along the way! (You may want to keep an extra towel in your vehicle just in case.)
4. Border Collie
Often considered to be the most intelligent dog breed, Border Collies are highly trainable and excel in navigating various terrains with agility and ease.
Their high energy levels make them great companions for longer hikes, where other breeds may tire more easily.
Much like Australian Shepherds, Border Collies need lots of exercise as well as mental stimulation to be happy. This should be taken into serious consideration, as behavioral issues can occur without proper outlets.
5. German Shepherd
Shepherds are often very protective of their owners, making them great companions for solo hikers or families.
They are also intelligent and strong, which means they enjoy traversing difficult terrain and putting their agility to use.
However, German Shepherds can often develop hip issues in their later years , something a dog owner will want to keep an eye on to ensure that they are hiking safely and pain free.
6. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are perhaps Americas favorite “family dog,” known for their friendly and loyal personalities.
Golden’s love being outdoors and typically interact well with other dogs and humans, wanting to make friends wherever they go!
It’s important to note that hip issues can develop early in Golden Retrievers, and most vets recommend limiting their exercise to less strenuous walks until they are at least one year of age. It never hurts to check with your vet before taking a pup of any breed on a big adventure.
Adopt or Shop?
There are several other dogs that make great hiking companions, including mixed breeds which are often intelligent and less likely to develop health issues as they age.
Where you choose to find your new best friend depends on several factors such as desired age, cost, location, the space you can provide, and how many people or pets are in your home. Whether you are looking to purchase from a breeder or adopt, make sure to choose the right breed for your lifestyle to ensure that your companion is as happy as you are!
